While some greenfield sites go with a high-level of automation from the start, for Mouser Electronics, the automation journey has been incremental, focusing on projects that help its workforce be more productive and accurate in meeting complex order requirements and hitting service-level targets.
While prior to 2016 Mouser’s DC was no stranger to automation, making use of automated carousels, conveyor and sortation, spiral conveyors and a mezzanine area for consolidation, as well as warehouse management software.
Over the last eight years, multiple advanced automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) have been deployed, and a new, connected DC and additional infrastructure have been added.
The key highlights include:
- 2015/2016: The DC begins adding some automated packaging lines to its DC, leveraging systems from Sealed Air.
- 2016: To speed up outbound shipping, a narrow-belt wave sorter from then TGW (now part of FORTNA) is installed to sort shipments to outbound docks.
- 2016: The DC deploys its first vertical lift modules (VLMs) from Kardex, starting with 44 VLMs, but added to a few years ago to now number 187 VLMs in Building 1. More VLMs are going into the campus’s Building 2 project.
- 2021: A Perfect Pick AS/RS from OPEX is installed to speed up order consolidation.
- Late 2021: An AutoStore system, integrated by Swisslog, is deployed, with 76,000 bins, 120 robots, 40 pick ports and 9 replenishment ports. Another, larger AutoStore system is planned for Building 2.
- 2022: Mouser breaks ground on its Building 2 project, a 416,000-square-foot DC that is connected to Building 1 by a sky-bridge with conveyor lines.
- 2024: A sortation loop is added to Building 1 to more efficiently feed items for induction into the Perfect Pick.
- 2024: Construction completed on Building 2, with installation of new automated systems in the new building underway, including 75 VLMs from Kardex, with long-term plans to add 225 more units. The new site features two receiving sorters and a large sortation loop to handle order consolidation, both from Eurosort. A pallet AS/RS will be part of the new building.
- 2024: Installation is completed for a large mezzanine structure for Building 2. The mezzanine platform from Steel King, a combination of single and two-level platforms that creates a triple-mezzanine structure, provides more than 230,000 square feet of working space to Building 2 to support operations, conveyor and VLM picking stations along with other means of automation.
