This Glossary is for several different areas combined together. After each term listed there is a two (2) digit code. These codes specify which areas use the term, as defined. A list of the codes and their meanings follows:

ABEND: (GE) Abnormal ending. A data processing term that may appear at the bottom of the terminal (CRT) screen when using a specific transaction. This message reflects that a program problem has been detected. Call Data Processing, before clearing the screen, and report the problem.
ACCOUNTS PAYABLE: (GE) Part of Division 05 General Accounting area specifically responsible for the Administration and control of data entry, invoice and microfilm control and vendor payments.
ADVANTAGE MEMBERSHIP: (WC) Sam's Wholesale members have the advantage of converting their Group membership into a card they pay a small fee for each year but may buy at Wholesale member prices. There is no
up-charge.
AGENT COMMISSIONS: (AC) The amount charged by Swire (or some other group) for acting as our agent in buying activities with our overseas vendors.
AIDCO: (GE) Arkansas Import Department Company. A specialized Sporting Goods department in Wal-Mart.
ALPHABETIC CHARACTER: (GE) Any one of the 26 letters of the alphabet.
APPLICATION: (GE) A list of instructions that are completed by a computer. An application is a group of programs.
APPLICATION PROGRAM: (GE) The specific job a Portable Tele-transaction Computer is programmed to do. Examples include ordering and receiving.
ARREARS: (HR) Situation when an Associate is behind in payment of insurance premiums due to an insufficient paycheck to cover their deductions; for example, if an hourly Associate does not work enough hours during the pay period, or if an Associate goes on a leave of absence and does not receive full pay.
ASSEMBLY ORDERS: (GE) Type 33 or 35 purchase order. These orders are twx'd by the stores (odd or even weeks depending on the Vendor) using the Assembly Order program which allows the stores to specify their own order quantity. The stores and quantities are consolidated and an Assembly Type Purchase Order is generated automatically by the system, providing a purchase order with store distribution to the Vendor.
BACKHAUL: (DI) Process where merchandise is transported from a vendor to a Distribution Center via a Wal-Mart truck.
BACKUP: (GE) Duplicating information from PC to a diskette which ensures that information is available in the event of loss or damage to the original information.
BAR CODE: (GE) A series of vertical bars and spaces used to encode numeric or alphanumeric information. Bar codes are designed to be read by electronic means such as with a bar code scanner or a laser scanner. 2) Type of coding found on Distribution Center pulling labels.
BAR CODE READER: (GE) An electrical device designed to recognize and decipher bar code labels. When the scanner passes over the bar code, it converts the bar code into electrical signals representing data. The Portable Tele-transaction Computer can then enter this data into files in its memory.
BAR-CODED TRAILER TAG: (DC) The trailer tag is a bar-coded identification tag to be attached to each trailer upon arrival. This tag is scanned at the Truck Gate by the Loss Prevention Associate.
BASIC INVENTORY MANAGEMENT (BIM):
(GE) Area responsible for tracking and re-ordering merchandise stocked in a Distribution Center for stores to order as needed based on the Distribution Center order schedule. Also known as staple stock merchandise.
BATCH: (DC) Distribution Center grouping of stores for better organized shipping. There are up to 24 stores per batch. Each Distribution Center has 20 assigned batch numbers available for the stores they service.
(GE) In Data Processing, a batch is a group of records or data processing jobs grouped together for control purposes during processing or transmission.
BATCH PROCESSING: (AC) The processing of information that is accumulated during the day and then processed at the same time during the evening.
BATCHPAY: (AC) Code word used to enter warehouse invoices and claims into the Series/1.
BAY: (DC) A bay corresponds to a single section of flow rack where there is a single EASYpick terminal. Pick-to-Lights Orderfilling.
BEREAVEMENT PAY: (HR) Up to three day funeral pay covering death in immediate family.
BIM: (GE) See Basic Inventory Management.
BLUE LIGHT: (DC) Used on the shipping lanes in the Distribution Center as a warning signal; means that a shipping lane is 75% full.
BOBTAIL: (DI) Transfer a tractor from one location to another.
BREAKDOWN: (DC) A store distribution made by Fashion Distribution for a WPM type purchase order designating the stores and quantities the softgoods are to be shipped and billed to.
BREAKPACK: (DC) Orderfilling area within the Distribution Center for Distribution and Staple Stock merchandise. Orders are filled less than a case on smaller and slow-moving items. Allows stores to order only the amount of merchandise they need. Orders are pulled using picking labels.
BROKERAGE INS: (AC) The brokerage insurance amount used by the Import department to off-set any additional expenses that might occur during shipment of a purchase order.
BRPK: (DC) See Breakpack.
BULK BREAK: (DI) A central terminal that receives trailer load merchandise. The merchandise is sorted by terminal location and then forwarded to the new terminal.
BULKHEAD: (DC) An upright partition, as in a ship, for protection against fire or leakage.
BULK SEASONAL: (DC) Seasonal merchandise that is bought in large quantities at a lower price. Mostly non-conveyable merchandise, such as lawn chairs, grills, coolers, etc. This merchandise is carried in the staple stock section of the Distribution Center.
BUYER: (GE) Associates in the Home Office who are responsible for buying merchandise from Vendors. Each department has at least one Buyer.
CANNED ORDER: (DC) An order placed for a new store for all departments. This is the initial order to stock a new store with staple stock merchandise. The canned order is keyed at the Home Office and orderfilled by the Distribution Centers.
CARRIER: (GE) Any truck line, rail line, etc. that carries freight.
CARRIER CODE: (GE) A unique combination of letters (code) assigned to a carrier by the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC).
CART (PULL CART): (DC) Four wheeled cart used in orderfilling. Labeled merchandise is placed on it, then transported to the conveyors or shipping dock. Also used in a manual Distribution Center that operates with a towveyor line instead of conveyors.
CARTON NUMBER: (DC) On the Picking Label, the first two digits of the carton number is the warehouse number. The last five digits are a system assigned sequential number for each label created within that store number. On fullcase merchandise, when the carton number reaches 99,999 it will start back with 12001.
